William Marsden was an Orientalist, linguist of Malay, philologist, numismatist, and most notably, a pioneer scholar in the scientific study specifically of Sumatra, and in general of the Malay Archipelago. He was also a translator, an avid collector especially of books, and a forerunner naturalist of Southeast Asia.
