Use of Social Networks as a Factor for the Development of Digital Citizenship in Puebla

The consolidation of social networks as important media has expanded the way in which we should understand citizenship, as migration to the digital world has created new ways in which we relate to each other and in which we can participate politically. Motivated by the digital divide prevailing in the country that prevents some from exercising these new rights, this exploratory study aims to know what the state of digital citizenship in the city of Puebla de Zaragoza is. The methodological instrument chosen was the survey. The questionnaire was applied to 385 residents of the capital. The findings indicate that while material access to the network is a fact for most people in the city, this is not enough to ensure full digital citizenship, since most respondents do not have more sophisticated skills to use Internet content ethically, in addition to being apathetic and uninvolved in political issues in their community.
