Corrosion Behaviour of High Entropy Alloys

Corrosion, an unavoidable and universal material challenge, can jeopardize the structural integrity, functionality, and lifespan of a crucial component. The investigation of corrosion behavior in high-entropy alloys focuses on how their complex composition and microstructure influence their susceptibility to various types of corrosion, including uniform, localized, and environmentally assisted corrosion. This study of the corrosion behavior of high-entropy alloys requires an integrative approach that incorporates elements of metallurgy, electrochemistry, materials characterization, and environmental science. Researchers strive to design high-entropy alloys with superior corrosion resistance tailored to specific environments ranging from marine and manufacturing processes to biomedical applications as they comprehend the convoluted interaction occurring at material surfaces and interfaces. This chapter consists discussion of the aqueous and chemical corrosion of high entropy alloys, their correlation with mechanical properties, and different processes to prevent corrosion such as coating and uniform phase distribution by annealing.
