On the Creep Collapse of the Cladding Considering the Irradiation Growth Effect

Creep collapse of the cladding is one of the most important performance to be verified at the fuel rod’s design stage to guarantee safe operation. The irradiation growth effect should be considered to improve the conservatism. In this study, finite element software ABAQUS was utilized to model the creep and irradiation growth of the cladding. The creep collapse criterion was established. The results show that irradiation growth can promote creep collapse of the cladding tube. Thus, the irradiation growth should be considered in the design of fuel rods in order to increase conservatism and safety.
