In-Store Monitoring of Harvested Tomatoes Using Internet of Things

Agriculture is one of the main pillars of human cultivation. Recently, smart agriculture techniques are used by the stakeholders in different steps of pre- and post-harvesting process. Due to large output, there is a high risk of fruit and vegetable deterioration. Fruits and vegetables are lost due to a variety of reasons, including poor warehouse management and ignorance. This paper covers one of these vegetables, the tomato, which experiences substantial losses as a result of a variety of elements, including the environment, insects, and others. Here we have proposed a module which features a four-layered architecture where Arduino and desktop machine have been used to establish machine-to-machine communication. Sensors including “DHT22,” “BMP180,” “MQ135,” “PIR Motion,” and “Microphone sensor” have been installed to track the circumstances of the tomato warehouse in real time. The desktop computer functions as the IoT gateway to control the warehouse system. It serves as a storage and management layer, controlling data storage and offering managerial features for businesses. Information from the sensors was gathered using the Arduino microcontroller board. The experiment's goal was to examine how tomato survival rates changed as a result of environmental conditions. Since the system is designed at a low cost, it can detect and notify the problems that most producers experience.
