Green Steel Technology: A Viable Approach for Sustainable World

The challenges towards significant climatic changes all over the world lead to the necessity of innovative approaches towards current steel making processes. The approaches are numerous but sustainable solutions are still far away. The other side Indian government has already set its ambitious goals in terms of steel production (i.e., 300 million tons by 2030), Electricity production (i.e., 830 Giga Watt by 2030), 50 per cent of India's energy production to be met by non-fossil fuels, and by 2070 the pledge of ‘Net Zero’ emissions. In a recent article, it was quoted that by 2050 if we meet the net zero, the country could boost an annual GDP to 7.3% and could also create more than 20 million jobs. In the race of this ambitious goals, steel industries have taken leading measures to adopt sustainable technologies for reduction of carbon foot print. The steel industries are taking new challenging paths in reducing the green-house gases (GHGs) with every ton of steel produced normally emits on average 1.85 tons of carbon dioxide. The main cause for energy inefficiency and environment pollution are due to the outdated steel production technology in use. Green Steel Technology (GST) is a new concept which deals with reducing the harmful greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides emissions, cuts costs and improves quality of steel. Current steel industry needs are to reduce the carbon foot print by identifying processes which can replace the fossil fuels, utilize energy saving technologies or utilizing renewable energy-based systems, reduce the industrial waste generation and utilizing the waste within the steel industry, encouraging decarbonization technologies and formulation of strict controls for minimizing the industrial pollution. Possible sustainable solutions will pave a way to achieve net zero emissions and increase the possibility of sustainable future.
