Pterygium is a common disease of the ocular surface with a long history. An Indian scholar, Susruta, first described pterygium and its surgical treatment in approximately 1000 BC. Through research by dozens of generations of ophthalmologists, Chakradatta et al. again described pterygium in detail and proposed treatment methods in 1060 AD.
