Prototyping for Healthcare Innovation

This chapter provides reflections from an experienced industrial designer on the importance of prototyping as part of the design process. She reflects on the criticality of creating low-fidelity prototypes in developing healthcare technologies with case examples of developing child-friendly PPE and a pain assessment device, including a frank discussion of the challenges involved in developing these projects to testable prototype stages. The chapter concludes with four principles for people-centred design making in healthcare—making for engaging, making meaning, making stories, and making language.
