Suggested Quality Control Measures for Cancer Care in the UAE

Cancer care in the UAE has evolved dramatically in the last few decades, but unfortunately, despite the progress, there is a lack of quality indicators implemented to ensure the delivery of unified and standard treatment for cancer across the UAE. One of the major challenges is the varying degree of experience and training of oncologists who come from all around the globe to practice in the UAE. With many following the NCCN guidelines, there are many others still practicing solo, which may affect the outcome of cancer patients. In this chapter, we will review recommendations for improving the quality of cancer care in the UAE. We recommend the establishment of an independent Advisory Cancer Care Quality Council to monitor the quality of care in both government and private hospitals across the UAE. We recommend adopting a cancer system quality index and also having a regular audit of cancer centers in the UAE to ensure adherence to the quality measure. These measures should address all aspects of cancer care, like radiation, surgical procedures, palliative care, and many others. A focus on quality control should also address the current cancer screening programs and accessibility.
