Science and Technology of Seaweed
摘要
Seaweed biomass, a diverse and abundant marine resource, holds significant potential in the field of science and technology. This chapter provides an overview of the current state of research and development in the utilization of seaweed biomass, highlighting its applications and the advancements made in this domain. Seaweeds called as macroalgae can be multicellular marine organisms seen in various coastal ecosystems worldwide. There are different species of its kind with diverse characteristics, including different pigments, cell structures, and biochemical compositions. This diversity presents an extensive array of possibilities for harnessing biomass for various scientific and technological purposes. One area of active research involves the extraction and utilization of bioactive compounds from seaweed biomass. These compounds, such as phycobiliproteins, polyphenols, and polysaccharides, have a number of properties, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activities. Researchers are investigating methods to efficiently extract and purify these compounds for potential applications in pharmaceuticals, functional foods, cosmetics, and nutraceuticals. Seaweed biomass is also gaining recognition as a valuable source of renewable energy. Through processes such as anaerobic digestion, fermentation, and pyrolysis, seaweed biomass can be converted into biofuels including biogas, bioethanol, and bio-oil. These biofuels offer a promising alternative to fossil fuels, with the added benefit of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to sustainable energy production. Furthermore, seaweed biomass demonstrates immense potential in the field of bioplastics. Seaweed-derived polysaccharides, such as agar, carrageenan, and alginate, possess unique gelling and film-forming properties. These properties make them suitable for developing biodegradable packaging materials, wound dressings, and scaffolds for tissue engineering applications. The use of seaweed biomass in these areas can significantly contribute to reducing the environmental impact of conventional plastic materials.
