Heteropolymer in Biomass: Hemicellulose Extraction and Modifications
摘要
Hemicellulose, a heterogeneous polysaccharide, plays a crucial role in the structural integrity of biomass, presenting an opportunity for its sustainable extraction and subsequent modification for a myriad of applications. Hemicellulose-derived compounds have shown promise in industries such as food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and biofuels. A promising route to achieve this goal is the extraction and subsequent modification of hemicellulose from lignocellulosic biomass. An exploration of the different extraction methods employed to isolate hemicellulose from lignocellulosic biomass is presented, highlighting the importance of optimizing these processes to obtain high yields and purity while minimizing environmental impact. Hemicellulose has been extracted from both woody and non-woody tissues using a variety of techniques such as alkaline or acidic treatments, steam explosion, or enzymatic hydrolysis. Additionally, newer technologies, such as microwave-assisted extraction and ultrasonic-assisted extraction, have gained attention for their potential to enhance hemicellulose extraction efficiency. The subsequent section focuses on the modification of hemicellulose to enhance its functional properties. Various chemical and enzymatic modification techniques are discussed, along with their effects on the physical, chemical, and mechanical characteristics of hemicellulose. The utilization of modified hemicellulose as a bio-based alternative in industries such as food, pharmaceuticals, packaging, and materials is also explored.
