State of the Art in Integrated Biosensors for Organ-on-a-Chip Applications

Organ-on-a-chip (OoaC) is a potential emerging technology in the healthcare business based on bioengineered tissue constructions combined with microfluidics. The chip’s microenvironment mimics tissue interfaces and mechanical stimulation of the organ, imitating its form and function using a synergy of cell biology, engineering, and biomaterial technologies. In this chapter, we discussed the sorts of biosensors required for various OoaC applications. OoaC critically monitors tissue structures, functionality, and metabolic activity of the cells to verify the cellular behavior and environments which mimic in vivo physiology. This chapter introduces the notion of OoaC about several organs. Application of OoaC in disease modeling concerning different organs, drug discovery and development, individualized precision medicine, organ transplantation, and cancer diagnosis and treatment will revolutionize the healthcare and bioengineering industries. In addition, we addressed the present challenges and prospects for OoaC applications.
