Case Study 1: Young Londoners’ Memories of the 2012 Olympic Games

This chapter delves into the data analysis and findings from the case study of the Olympic Games in London 2012. It explores and discusses the results from the narratives of young participants of London in relation to their discursive memories and expectations of the Games. The findings and results are mixed between first-hand and mediated recollections, with the view of ascertaining the role of the media and memory in the construction of national, local and transnational identity aspects. As a result, the chapter is split between two samples of data: newspaper front pages (media aspect) and participants’ discourses in relation to the past event of the Olympic Games. Questions about national, local and transnational identities are explored and interwoven with mediated and first-hand discursive memories from the young participants from London in light of the 2012 Olympic Games.
