The Olympics from Youth Perspective: A New Methodological Approach

This chapter outlines and describes the methodological approach applied in this book. It begins by explaining the reason why this research project was underpinned by a mixture of qualitative methods and modes of analysis and the importance of the research design put together to reflect the three main fields addressed and explored in the study (Media, Memory and Youth citizenship across the North–South divide). Three research questions are put forward in order to contextualise the rationale and need for this study and, subsequently, the methods selected for this research. The chapter also explains, in detail, the importance of space, place and diversity when conducting research with young people in light of mega-events and identity constructions and how these aspects were carefully integrated into the methodology. Finally, but equally important, in the chapter I explain the ethical considerations taken on board when conducting the study, particularly with young people.
