Chondrosarcoma Pelvis for Internal Hemipelvectomy

Chondrosarcoma is one of the commonest primary malignant bone tumors. The commonest primary sites comprise the proximal humerus, proximal femur, and pelvis. Long-standing swelling and/or pain are the common presentations. Surgical resection has been the cornerstone of treatment. Internal hemipelvectomy constitutes a limb-sparing procedure while external hemipelvectomy comprises resection of the innominate bone and limb amputation. Since surgery for hemipelvectomy is complex, a detailed pre-anesthesia checkup is essential. It’s a painful prolonged surgery with extensive blood loss. So, general anesthesia combined with epidural catheter insertion is the technique of choice. Epidural catheter provides intraoperative pain relief, hypotensive anesthesia, and also helps in postoperative pain relief. Massive transfusion of blood and blood products, hypothermia, coagulopathy, bone cement-associated problems, and severe pain may necessitate postoperative care in a critical care unit.
