Wilms Tumour

Wilms tumour or nephroblastoma is one of the commonest tumours prevalent in paediatric population. The most common presentation is abdominal mass (40%) with various symptoms like haematuria (25%), nausea, vomiting, malaise, fever, abdominal pain and anorexia. The anaesthetic concerns include various syndromic associations, anaemia, poor nutrition, renal dysfunction, chemotherapy-related side effects and complications, hypertension, vascular extension of tumour, maintenance of intraoperative thermoregulation, ventilation with raised intraabdominal pressure, fluid management, intermittent inferior vena cava compression, tumour and thromboembolism and potential for intraoperative haemorrhage. Interdisciplinary collaboration between the anaesthetists, surgeon, oncologist and intensivist and vigilant perioperative care is mandatory for optimal outcomes in these challenging cases.
