Overview: Status, Classification and Nomenclature of Fungi Among Living Organisms

From the ancient Greek philosopher Aristoteles to the Swedish plant taxonomist Linnaeus (1753), life forms were classified by the naked eye, as belonging to either Plantae (plant kingdom) or Animalia (animal kingdom). This is the most ancient classification system based on two kingdoms. The standards for defining the two kingdoms are: members of plant kingdom have fixed roots but no fixed shapes, autotrophic (photosynthetic), cell walls composed of cellulose; members of animal kingdom have free mobility and certain fixed shapes, heterotrophic (ingestive), without cell wall. By this system, fungi fall into the category of Eumycota, the plant kingdom.
