Quantifying the Trends and Impacts of Solid Waste Generation in Chennai City: A Study of Current Management Practices and Future Needs

摘要

Chennai City, the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, has seen a rapid increase in solid waste generation in recent years. With its growing population and expanding urbanization, the city is facing major challenges in managing the increasing amounts of solid waste generated. The purpose of this study was to examine the solid waste generation patterns in Chennai City in recent years and to identify the factors contributing to this trend. Data was collected from various sources, including government reports and academic studies, to analyze the patterns of solid waste generation in the city. The results showed that the amount of solid waste generated in Chennai City has increased significantly in recent years, reaching over 4000 metric tons per day. The major contributors to this increase include rapid population growth, urbanization, and changing lifestyles, which have led to an increase in the generation of household waste. The study also found that the solid waste management system in Chennai City is facing significant challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, lack of proper collection and disposal mechanisms, and low levels of public awareness and participation. These challenges have resulted in a lack of effective management of solid waste, leading to environmental and health problems for the city’s residents. To address the challenges faced by Chennai City in managing its solid waste, the study recommends the implementation of effective solid waste management strategies, including the development of appropriate infrastructure, the promotion of public awareness and participation, and the adoption of more sustainable waste management practices. Additionally, the study suggests that the city should implement waste reduction and recycling programs, as well as encourage the development of waste-to-energy facilities to minimize the environmental impact of solid waste. Accurate quantification of solid waste generation data is crucial for effective solid waste management. The results of the study will provide valuable information for the development of effective solid waste management strategies and the improvement of the city’s overall waste management system. By quantifying the solid waste generation data in Chennai City, it is possible to identify areas for improvement and promote sustainable waste management practices. In conclusion, the rapid increase in solid waste generation in Chennai City in recent years has highlighted the need for effective solid waste management strategies. By addressing the challenges faced by the city in managing its solid waste, it is possible to ensure a more sustainable future for its residents and the environment.
