Impacts of Natural Disasters on the Performance of Residential Construction Projects of Kashmir, J&K

Kashmir, a Himalayan region, is particularly exposed to devastating natural catastrophes. Natural catastrophes have been more common in the region during the last several decades. These natural disasters provide several challenges to the construction sector, making it difficult to complete construction projects within the allocated time and budget. The goal of this study is to identify the issues that arise in residential construction projects as a result of natural catastrophes. The effect of five key factors on construction project performance and their interactions with project performance are described using a theoretical structural model. The data was collected by questionnaire survey. A total of 79 responses were collected. The data is analyzed using a structural equation modelling approach. The final model takes into account 25 variables, which are divided into five categories: financial, delays, manpower, material and equipment, and environmental. The final structural model’s findings reveal that the construction project’s performance is greatly influenced by the manpower involved. Despite the limitations, project managers will benefit from the results of this research when it comes to recognizing, avoiding, and managing natural disaster-related risks in construction projects, as well as allocating resources appropriately.
