PID Control for Building with an Active Mass Damper

In the civil engineering area, structural control technology takes real consideration, especially in recent works and research. However, the active mass damper is a control device used in several cases to suppress undesired structural vibrations caused by winds or earthquakes. Thus, the active device offers the real-time adjustment possibility of structural responses. This paper proposes an active mass damper to mitigate structural vibration caused by ground acceleration. The tested structure is a three-scaled structure excited using the 2003 Boumerdès earthquake excitation. To calculate the desired force of control, a proportional integral derivative algorithm is proposed in a closed loop. The active control is evaluated via numerical simulation results of compared displacement responses of the uncontrolled structure to those of the active-controlled structure. The carried-out results proved the active control strategy’s effectiveness in suppressing the excited structures’ vibration.
