Finite Element Analysis of Pelvic Stability to Predict Post-trapdoor Risk During Bone Grafting Procedure

Bone grafting is a commonly adopted practice used to rebuild the damaged bone. Because of the composition of corticocancellous bone present at the ilium, it is considered as a preliminary site for bone harvesting. Preliminary studies showed that the extraction of bone for grafting procedures is generally carried out without plan and rehearsal which cause post-surgical complications. As a procedure, a three-dimensional model of pelvis was developed from a computed tomography dataset and then analyzed using Abaqus® software. Results showed that the 5.30 MPa stress developed on the pelvis before harvesting bone was greater at the anterior sacroiliac joint followed by 4.40 MPa stress developed on the ilium and 0.96 MPa on iliac crest regions. The magnitude of post-harvest stress at iliac crest was found to be minimum (2.20 MPa) for rectangular bone harvesting pattern than triangular pattern. The outcomes of this study can be used to prevent pelvic instability.
