Influence of Cracks in Various Tunnel Components on the Mechanical Properties of Tunnel Linings

Cracking in tunnel linings is one of the most common abnormalities observed in the tunnels. The study of the behaviour of cracked tunnels is important to determine the load-carrying capacity of the tunnel section. The present study aims to determine the effect of multiplicity of cracks on invert of the tunnel section, on the stresses and displacements of the concrete lining section. The pre-existing cracks diminish the bearing area of the linings, suggesting a reduction in the bearing capacity of cracked tunnel sections. However, cracking at the critical location of the tunnel section would have quite diverse effects on the mechanical properties of tunnels.
