Experimental Investigation of Chimney Plume Dispersion Characteristics

Present work is focused on experimental investigation of chimney plume development and effect of crosswind on plume development characteristics. Experiments are carried out in open jet wind tunnel. Cylindrical chimney model of 32 mm inner diameter is used for the study. Experiments are conducted for different combination of plume and wind velocity ratio (0 to 3). Flow visualization and Pitot probe measurements are done for investigation. Wake measurement and centerline velocity of plume are obtained. From measurement, it is observed that with increase in velocity ratio plume bends. After certain velocity ratio (0.6) plume starts showing downwash characteristics. Wake of the chimney is dominated by interaction between plume and vortical structure closer to the chimney. Far away from chimney similarity in velocity is seen.
