Effect of Upstream Energy Deposition Rate on Flow Characteristics of a Scramjet Engine

The concept of energy deposition method to reduce flow spillage at intake and as a means of deflecting upstream flow into a high compression intake of a Scramjet vehicle at off-design Mach numbers of 5 and 4.5 was explored using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). An in-house developed two-dimensional inviscid CFD solver was used to conduct the studies. The Immersed Boundary Method for boundary reconstruction has been incorporated in the Finite Volume method, which makes the process of generating grids for complex geometries easier. The studies have been carried out based on two different locations for depositing the energy and two different energy strengths of 10 and 30 MW/m3. The performance was assessed in terms of intake mass flow ratio and pressure recovery factor.
