Use of Blood Products in Critically Ill Children with Focus on Cardiac Diseases

Blood and blood products are frequently needed in pediatric cardiac intensive care unit. While administration of blood and blood products can be lifesaving, these products are not without risk. Infection, transfusion reactions, and transfusion-related lung injuries are some of the complications associated with blood products transfusion. Therefore, the use of blood products should be restricted to clear indications. We will review general recommendations for blood transfusion and different blood product indications and guidelines for their replacement and administration in critical pediatric cardiac patients.
