Access and Expert Management of the Airway

Expert management of the airway is a core skill of the Pediatric lntensivist. Thus, all Pediatric Intensivists must be trained in emergency and elective management of the normal airway. In addition, every Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) must have access to Pediatric Intensivists or Pediatric Anesthetists trained in the management of abnormal airway situations which are common in pediatrics, such as the congenitally difficult airway, acute epiglottitis and laryngotracheobronchitis.
