摘要

The demand for functional foods as nutritional and immunity-boosting supplements has grown in recent years due to people’s greater health awareness. This has accelerated several clinical trials on the advantageous results of combining probiotics and prebiotics as synbiotics on hosts. Nutraceuticals are the category of foods that are taken by oral route to supplement the requirements of food and also prevent some diseases or help in curing some disorders. Prebiotics, probiotics, synbiotics, antioxidants, and dietary fibers are classified under nutraceuticals. Synbiotics are a mixture of prebiotics and a probiotic that have proven to give many beneficial effects. When given in combination, they cause a synergistic action on the host’s health. Synbiotics can have health benefits like better digestion, better immunity, enhanced cardiovascular health, diminished inflammation, and decreased obesity. Microencapsulation, nanocapsulation, and cereal- and legume-based synbiotic beverages are newer techniques for better delivery of synbiotics. The current chapter focuses on the most recent finding of synbiotics and their health benefits, advancement, and future prospects of synbiotics with their optimistic effect on the host.
