Quality Control and Evaluation of Synbiotics Nutraceutical Product
摘要
The current book chapter discusses the quality control and efficacy of synbiotics nutraceutical products. Synbiotics is a term nowadays being frequently used to define a combination of probiotics and prebiotics. Prebiotics are indigestible compounds that act as food for beneficial microbes in the gut. These compounds are found in many foods, including onions, garlic, bananas, chicory root, and asparagus, and have been linked to improved digestion and overall health. Prebiotics feed the growth of beneficial bacteria, including Bifidobacterium and Lactobacilli, which in turn produce metabolites that are beneficial for the host. In the present book chapter, an attempt has been made to highlight the rationale behind using synbiotics, quality control parameters to ensure the quality of synbiotics with supportive in vitro as well as in vivo studies. Findings related to the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials have also been discussed to have a complete understanding of the favorable risk-benefit analysis before administrating it to patients. The lacunae of the quality control and efficacy of synbiotics nutraceutical products are the proper validation of each product in vitro as well as in vivo, as creating human gut and intestinal environment in vitro is a challenging task for proper sample analysis. In the future it could be hoped that through more effective validatory tools, the evaluation and use of synbiotics would be more operative and easier.
