Synbiotics and Drug Delivery: An Introduction

In recent years tremendous research has been done to create a bridge between prebiotics and probiotics to be used as therapeutic agents as synbiotics. There exist many preclinical and clinical studies wherein synbiotics have been found efficacious in treating metabolic diseases, neurological diseases, cancer, as well as certain autoimmune diseases such as psoriasis. However, there are very few studies wherein the role of synbiotics as carrier in drug delivery system have been entailed. These studies include utilization of synbiotics as adsorbents for lipid-based nanoformulations, colon targeting of certain anticancer and antiulcer drugs, as well as carrier for liquisolid formulations. These studies have shown good potential of synbiotics in treating disease as well as pharmaceutical carriers. The current chapter deals with dual role of synbiotics in drug delivery.
