摘要

Synbiotics, are employed as nutritional supplement and emerged as functional food from last couple of years. It is the blend of probiotics and prebiotics and plays key role in metabolism of various nutritional substrates and aids in maintaining human health. Prebiotics potentiate development of probiotics and can assist in alteration of gut microflora and restores eubiosis. Synbiotics are useful in the management of gut-associated disease conditions, which occurs due to dysfunction of normal gut microflora. Synbiotics are used as nutraceutical as well as excipient in the development of different oral formulations. In addition, they enhanced the therapeutic activity of the drugs when given in combination therapy. They are generally present in fruits, raw vegetables, dairy, and fermented products. Synbiotics are widely employed in various disease states like, gastrointestinal disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular diseases. This book chapter mainly emphasizes on the role of synbiotic in the management of various disease conditions arising as a result of gut microflora dysfunction Finally, we have briefly talked about the safety of prebiotics, probiotics, and synbiotics with respect to their clinical applications.
