Walking and Making: Encountering with Materials

This is the author’s personal yearlong walking-makingMaking-learning ‘mappingMap/mapping a/r/tography’ project. The author shares how a/r/tographic living inquiryLivingliving inquiry taught her a daily practice, not as an end result, but as a deeper understanding of and connecting with materialMaterial experiencesExperience along the way. Secondly, this chapter shares why this walking-making-learning materially matters. By walking, doing, engaging, listeningListen/listening, and talking with materialsMaterial, she was ‘thinking in materials’ and ‘living with materials.’ In addition, the author describes how she kept in mind the landLand artist Andy Goldsworthy’sGoldsworthy, Andy ways of existing with and encountering materials in a particular space while being/making artistic creations in a public open space. In these ways, the chapter invites readers to think about how the author’s intentions and relations with materialsMaterial provoked and evoked unique inspirations in herself as well as in others.
