Self-portrait: Walking Through A/r/tography and Images of Self

This work aims to presentPresent the artistic and aestheticAesthetic activity of creating self-portraits carried out with approximately 280 studentsStudents in an ArtArt and EducationEducation Pedagogy course at the Federal University of Ceara, BrazilBrazil. The self-portrait workshopWorkshop has been taking place since 2014 and it is inspired by Brazilian artist Vik Muniz’s documentary “Waste LandLand” and employs the Triangular Approach by Ana Mae Barbosa (2010). During the workshopsWorkshop, the self-portrait is built from the walk and collection of materialsMaterial belongingBelonging to the place where they study, thus developing the notions of integration and identification with the space they inhabitInhabit. Working with conceptsConcept that involve walking as a methodology for identifying and collecting fragmentsFragment of ourselves, the self-portraits emerge as an artistic practice that contributes to understanding ‘how we are’ and the world that surround us. After the construction of the self-portraits, studentsStudents are invited to deconstructDeconstruct their works, showing that in this case the processProcess of art makingArt-based methodart-making can generate better reflections than the result itself. The students experienced this processProcess being led, step by step, to themselves, (re)knowing and (re)discovering their creative potentialPotential, promoting new experiencesExperience in the field of artArt educationEducation as future teachers.
