Mapping Post-industrial Areas Through Entanglements of Time and Space

In the industrialIndustrial and post-industrialPost-industrial areas of the old harbor in central Næstved, DenmarkDenmark, smaller industries and recreational and artistic organizations now contribute to the transformation of a once heavily polluted city. The abandonedAbandoned and re-inhabited buildings and surrounding areas allow for a look that takes in the pastPast as it does future city planning and gentrificationGentrification. In this chapter, the authors consider the issues and tensions of this development by mappingMap/mapping central time and space relations of pastPast ideals, presentPresent activities, and future plans that include the aestheticsAesthetic of the harbour’s terrainTerrain vague. This is carried out through a form of walking research juxtaposing archiveArchive photos, visual artsArt, observationsObservation, and GPSGlobal Positioning System (GPS) tracking of the observer. Such a combination of methods offers a depth and breadth to the analysis—contextualizing the phenomenologicalPhenomenological experiencesExperience of walking alongside structural and historical aspects of archiveArchive photos and tracking. Inspired by Rämö (1999), Blokland (2017), and Casey (2009), the authors analyze emerging aspects and discordance brought about through the harbour’s transformation, offering an illustration of how walking as a research method can endeavour to disentangle temporalTemporal/temporalities issues of space and place.
