Surgery with or without adjunctive therapy remains the treatment of choice for carcinoma of tongue. Resection of tongue not only reduces organ bulk but also may markedly reduce the mobility of remaining musculature. The result is impaired articulation and dysphagia, particularly through oral phases of deglutition. The degree of such functional impairment depends on extent of surgical resection of tongue.
