Analysis and Characteristics of Physically Unclonable Functions

This paper provides a concise overview of a physical entity namely, physical unclonable functions. This tool for generating random numbers is prescribed for the authentication of edge devices. This paper discusses the working of physically unclonable functions (PUF), followed by a deep analysis upon the types of physically unclonable functions. Scope of this paper further extends toward various types of attacks physically unclonable functions are prone to. Insights are laid upon the characteristics of PUFs, namely uniqueness, reliability, and randomness, and python codes for the same are jotted down. Real-time Challenge Response Pairs (CRP) of Anderson Arbiter PUF zedboard are tested to check the correctness of the algorithm. A python-based algorithm was fabricated to find out uniqueness, reliability, and randomness is also discussed in the paper. Post the analysis, the uniqueness, reliability, and randomness came out to be 48.975, 99.973, 99.475 for first CRP and 47.823, 99.973, 98.124 for second CRP, respectively.
