Pneumocystis jirovecii Fungi Detection Using Microscopy Image: A Deep Learning Approach

Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia is a dangerous infection, and one of the main causes of this infection is Pneumocystis jirovecii fungi. Diagnosing these fungi at an early stage can prevent from their severe stage. An artificial intelligence-based automated, efficient and robust framework is proposed. In this method, a special vision transformer network is trained which is capable to handle complex intraclass diverse datasets. The proposed method achieves 84.85% accuracy on the validation set and 83.33% accuracy on the unseen test set. Vision transformer (ViT) performed efficiently and accurately as compared with other state-of-the-art networks. The presented framework works faster and can perform effectively in real time.
