Landscape and Status of Global Accreditation Bodies

The quality of a product is the foremost requirement in today’s scenario, and quality can be the different meaning for the different users in terms of various dimensions of the product or services. The product and services can have various dimensions in terms of characteristic of the products. The characteristics of the product can be its dimensions, durability, and other parameters set by the various standards. The products produced in one part of the globe can meet the requirements if used in the other part of the globe. The products manufactured in one part of the world or manufactured by different manufacturer should meet the permissible limits of the product, so that these products can be used anywhere in the world. The products which can meet the required parameters as per the specific standards must be produced and tested under the reliable system. Accreditation bodies play a pivotal role in ensuring the quality, safety, and competence of organizations and institutions across various sectors worldwide. The global status of accreditation bodies can be characterized by several key trends. Firstly, there is a growing emphasis on international cooperation and mutual recognition of accreditation, with organizations like the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) and the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) leading efforts to harmonize accreditation standards and practices. This trend was essential in promoting cross-border trade and fostering trust in products and services on a global scale. Secondly, the demand for accreditation was on the rise, particularly in sectors like healthcare, education, and environmental management, where public trust and safety are paramount. Accreditation became a vital tool for governments, businesses, and consumers to assess the quality and reliability of services, institutions, and products. Furthermore, technological advancements and digital transformation were influencing accreditation processes, enabling more efficient and transparent evaluations while also raising new challenges related to cybersecurity and data protection. The accreditation bodies are required to attest the competence of the various laboratories in the field of testing and calibration along with proficiency testing provider and reference material producers. The operations of the accreditation bodies are peer evaluated by the regional organizations as per ISO/IEC 17011. The accreditation bodies having full membership or mutual recognition arrangement (MRA)Mutual recognition arrangement (MRA) is granted based on the peer evaluation done by the regional bodies and finally by International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC). The MRA status provides the acceptability of testing and calibration results of the accredited laboratories in the member countries. The present chapter discusses the state of rise and reach of global accreditation bodies in the pursuits of quality assurance.
