This chapter provides a review of plant genetic resources (PGRs) in Chile, with a main focus on gene bank facilities, preserved germplasm, and research on collections of the gene bank network administered by the Instituto de Investigaciones Agropecuarias (INIA). The INIA gene bank network currently holds over 90% of the total collections reported in the country. Most of the accessions are preserved in seed banks (96%), with the remainder in field collections (2.5%) and in vitro gene banks (1.6%). Nearly 70% and 60% of INIA’s seed accessions have been agronomically characterized and documented, respectively, but only part of them have molecular characterization. Field collections are predominantly from fruit crops with the grapevine collection being the largest, thoroughly studied molecularly but only partially studied agronomically and morphologically. INIA gene banks store a representative fraction of the genetic diversity for the majority of PGR strategy for agriculture and food security in Chile. However, work needs to be done on the following:
