This chapter provides the results from extensive research conducted from 2000 to 2023 on agricultural plant genetic resources in the Republic of Kazakhstan, as part of both national and international projects and programs. Plant genetic resources (PGRs) have gained significant importance due to the increasing genetic erosion; loss of agricultural plant varieties, species, and genera; and a decrease in the number and variety of cultivated crops. The research on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (PGRFA) in Kazakhstan began in 2000. These efforts were conducted in accordance with internationally recognized principles and legal norms, including the CBD (1992), the GPA (1996), and the Nagoya Protocol (2015), all of which have been adopted by the Republic of Kazakhstan. The establishment of an effective national system for ex situ biodiversity conservation (GenBank) in Kazakhstan is supported by the country’s diverse array of useful, rare, and wild plant species, as well as agricultural plant agrobiodiversity that has not yet been collected or preserved for rational use. This chapter presents a strategy for collecting, characterizing, documenting, and conserving PGRFA based on the analysis of completed long-term national and international projects and programs. It also includes information on economically valuable agronomic traits, such as productivity and adaptability, as well as the resistance of selected germplasm to various types of stresses. Furthermore, the chapter offers recommendations for the effective use of gene bank material in breeding research.
