Integrating Tourism Supply Chain Operations Reference Model into Circular Economy Principles in the Context of Achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Sustainable development goals (SDGs) have become a major concern worldwide, and the tourism industry plays a vital role in the economic, environmental, and sociocultural development. This chapter explores the integration of tourism supply chain management factors or factors of supply chain operations reference (SCOR) model into circular economy principle (CEP) as a strategic approach to achieving SDGs. Tourism, as a multifaceted industry, depends on various interconnected supply chain factors, and on the other side, by adopting CEP, such as waste reduction, resource efficiency, and closed-loop systems, it is possible to utilize tourism resource, minimize environmental negative effects, and enhance socio-economic benefits, and thus, SDGs can be achieved. All these activities related to SCORE model factors and CEP are handled by tourism stakeholders. The nature of this research is qualitative, and in-depth interview from Bangladeshi tourism stakeholders is conducted to collect data. As this paper examines how factors of SCOR model affect CEP and, in turn, it achieves SDGs, the integration of these principles fosters a sustainable tourism industry, leading to positive social, economic, and environmental outcomes for destinations worldwide. However, successful implementation requires a transformative mindset, comprehensive policies, and coordinated efforts from all stakeholders involved in the tourism supply chain management. Ultimately, this chapter contributes to inspiring and informing tourism industry players, policymakers, and academia about the potential of CEP in realizing SDGs although there are some limitations because it does not provide quantitative assessments and data has not been collected in a large scale.
