Visual Metaphors in News Cartoons About Targeted Poverty Alleviation in China

Recent years have witnessed a rapid growth of visual metaphor studies in a variety of genres. Cartoons are more and more popular as communicative and transitive methods of dispersing information. News cartoons are used to comment on social concerns, such as “Targeted Poverty Alleviation” (精准扶贫 (jīn zhún fú pín). This research aims to identify the visual metaphors in the news cartoons about “Targeted Poverty Alleviation” and explains the meaning construction of these metaphors to reveal the messages encoded therein. All the visual metaphors demonstrate that the Chinese people are determined to fight against poverty, showing confidence and insistence toward targeted poverty alleviation. All the cartoons suggest that the Chinese government has zero tolerance toward these otherwise transgressive behaviors.
