Bone Tumors: An Overview

Bone tumors account for less than 1% of all tumors. Most patients come with a history of progressive pain. Age and location of tumors are important indicators. Clinicoradiological features may vary. Etiology of most tumors is still unknown. Importance of careful history and thorough physical examination cannot be overemphasized. Histopathologic examination is confirmatory and should be performed with meticulous planning, keeping in mind the final surgery. Bone tumors are classified according to the cell of origin (cartilage, osteoid, fibrous, unknown, hematopoietic tissue and notochord). Malignant sarcomas metastasize usually through hematogenous route, most commonly to lungs. Osteosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma metastasize to other bone sites.
