Optical microscopy is unique in current imaging modalities. It can detect living tissue at subcellular resolution, visualize morphological details in tissue, and cannot be resolved by ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging. However, to date, optical microscopy has not been fully successful in providing high resolution morphological information with chemical specificity.
