Comorbidities in the Cancer Patient

Comorbidity in cancer patients is an important issue especially in the aging population. Comorbidities may impact decisions about cancer treatment and cancer outcomes and also pose competing risks for morbidity and mortality. Cardiovascular diseases, chronic respiratory disease, cancer and diabetes contribute to 61% of deaths due to noncommunicable diseases in India. The challenges of managing cancer patients with comorbidities are multiple, including the lack of guidelines for managing these complex patients and polypharmacy. Comprehensive evaluation and integrated management of comorbidities should be done in all patients with cancer for better outcomes.
