摘要

This chapter describes the role of a surgical pathologist as a diagnostician, which encompasses tissue grossing, tumor typing, and subtyping with ancillary techniques, including immunohistochemistry, and, currently, molecular testing for various additional prognostic and predictive factors. Pathological examination will always remain the gold standard for cancer diagnosis, and, nowadays, a pathologists is one of the essential and integral contributors to the clinical disease management team. In addition to routine histopathological procedures, a pathologist’s contribution to translational medicine by adopting the role of custodian of biorepository is discussed. At the end, the strengths of digital pathology and application of machine/deep learning to whole slide imaging to classify cancer and hone prognostic/predictive skills are discussed.
