摘要

Plant phenolics are secondary metabolites that are produced by plants for numerous reasons. These include several classes of structurally diverse molecules produced from shikimate–phenylpropanoids–flavonoids pathways. The phenolic compounds have diverse roles in plant growth, resistance to pathogens, pigmentation, reproduction, and many other roles. Numerous plant phenolics are helpful in resistance against insects and other pests. The phenolic compounds are adaptations acquired by plants during natural selection. Since plants cannot move physically, so they need a chemical defense against insects and pests. This is where the role of secondary metabolites comes into play. This chapter deals with the classification, synthesis, and role of plant phenolics against insects and other pests.
