Bioconversion of Glycerol for Bioethanol Production Using Soil Consortium

Biodiesel use as an environmentally friendly fuel has attracted a lot of attention in recent years. However, glycerol is a waste generated from the biodiesel production process, which poses an environmental problem. Its utilization as a value-added product such as ethanol can be interesting. The glycerol conversion into bioethanol can be produced by microbial fermentation. In this work, we used synthetic glycerol medium as source of carbon to investigate bioethanol production, using soil bacterial consortium. The highest ethanol concentration of 1.28 g/l was obtained after 72 h, at pH 8 and 30 °C, under aerobic condition and glycerol concentration 30 g/l.
