This introductory chapter begins with human language and intelligence constituting six levels of linguistics followed by a brief history of NLP with major components and applications. It serves as the cornerstone to the NLP concepts and technology in the following chapters. This chapter also serves as the conceptual basis for Workshop#1—Basics of Natural Language Toolkit (NLTK) in Chap. 10 .
