Implementation of Visible Light Positioning with Photodiodes

Photodiode (PD)-based visible light positioning (VLP) systems can achieve centimeter-level accuracy, high positioning frequency, and low signal processing complexity. Thus they can serve as infrastructures for smart cities and smart villages, providing coordinates information for navigation, mobile communication, monitoring, and sensing systems. However, the implementation of such systems requires the knowledge of optoelectronics and circuits, and the positioning accuracy is hampered by the imperfection of the electronics and noises, making it challenging to realize a usable VLP system. In this chapter, a simple and efficient framework for implementing VLP systems with PDs is developed, and the related optoelectronics and amplifiers are introduced. The framework is compatible with various VLP algorithms in the other sections and can be realized with economical devices. The content of this chapter can help engineers and researchers to rapidly build VLP platforms to verify their algorithms with the commercially available devices.
