Chemoport (TIVADs—Totally Implantable Venous Access Devices): Complications and Management

Chemoports have increased safety and feasibility of administering long term chemotherapy or medications but can have potentially life-threatening complications. Appropriately guided insertion technique, postoperative monitoring, staff training, patient counselling and good infection control practices for port handling as well as new research can minimize the complications like vascular injury, malposition, thrombosis, infection, extravasation etc. Early recognition and timely management of complications would avoid life threatening situations and long term morbidity due to complications.
